Flag-In Ceremony of HMI Divyangjan Expedition 2024: Celebrating the 110th Birth Anniversary of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and the 71st Everest Day

 Under the auspices of the Ministry of Defence, The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute (HMI) proudly commemorated a historic double milestone today, marking the 110th birth anniversary of the legendary Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and the 71st Everest Day. The occasion was highlighted by the Flag-In Ceremony of the HMI Divyangjan Expedition, which was virtually inaugurated and chaired by Shri Satyajit Mohanty, Joint Secretary (A/F) DHMI, Ministry of Defence. This event celebrated the indomitable human spirit overcoming physical limitations, exemplifying the triumph of determination and resilience.

The Divyangjan Expedition, led by Group Captain Jai Kishan and supported by Team HMI, achieved a remarkable feat as Shri Uday Kumar, a one-leg amputee, unfurled the largest tri-color flag atop Mt. Rhenock in Kanchenjunga National Park on April 20, 2024. This extraordinary accomplishment stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the unyielding will to succeed against all odds.

During his address, Shri Satyajit Mohanty commended HMI for its pioneering efforts in empowering Divyangjan (specially-abled individuals) and women within the challenging realm of adventure sports. He highlighted the institute's significant contributions to the 'Vikshit Bharat' (Developed India), 'Mera Yuva Bharat' (My Youthful India), and Women Empowerment (Nari Shakti) initiatives, emphasizing HMI's dedication to fostering an inclusive and progressive society.

“The expedition not only overcame physical obstacles but also dismantled stereotypes, illustrating that determination transcends limitations. It served as a guiding light, inspiring individuals to pursue their aspirations relentlessly, irrespective of hurdles they may face. HMI's commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity stands as a praiseworthy example for the nation, embodying the essence of unity in diversity. I extend my best wishes to the institute's leadership and staff for their future endeavours, hoping that the institute continues to shine brightly and uphold the spirit of adventure,” Shri Satyajit Mohanty stated.

The celebrations also witnessed a vibrant assembly of HMI staff and their families, students from the ongoing mountaineering course, esteemed guests, and members of the Sherpa community. Together, they paid homage to Tenzing Norgay Sherpa by offering pujas, khadas, and lighting 110 diyas in his honor. The presence of Shri Jamling Sherpa, Tenzing Norgay's son, and his family added profound significance to the occasion.

Tenzing Norgay Sherpa, famed for his pioneering ascent of Mount Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1953, holds a special place in HMI’s history as its first Director of Field Training. His contributions have been instrumental in establishing HMI as a leading institution in mountaineering education.

The celebrations included the felicitation of former instructors who have devoted many years to HMI, enhancing its prestigious reputation. Two female HMI instructors, Miss Sulaxchana and Miss Neaha Rai, were also felicitated for their outstanding achievement in the field of adventure sports. A highlight of the event was a vibrant Sherpa cultural dance performed by a local Sherpa group, showcasing the rich heritage and traditions of the Sherpa community.

The Himalayan Mountaineering Institute remains committed to nurturing the spirit of adventure and promoting inclusivity and diversity, drawing inspiration from the legacy of Tenzing Norgay Sherpa. The Ministry of Defence official affirmed that full support will be provided for the institute’s future endeavours, ensuring HMI continues to shine as a beacon of adventure and inclusion.
