NCC Cadets of Guwahati Celebrates ‘National Sports Day’with Enthusiastic “RUN FOR FUN” Event.
60 Assam Girls Battalion NCC, under the aegis of NCC Group, Guwahati under NCC Directorate North Eastern Region (NER), hosted a spirited “RUN FOR FUN” event to mark “National Sports Day” at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Narangi. The event saw an impressive turnout of around 400 cadets including both Senior Division Boys and Senior Wing Girls of around 50 colleges/universities of Guwahati who participated in the 4km run and a motivational talk by eminent sports personality, demonstrating their commitment to fitness and community spirit.
The run commenced at 6:00 AM, was flagged off by Col Ajay Kumar Sharma, Commanding Officer, 60 Assam Girls Battalion NCC, Guwahati. His presence underscored the importance of sports in fostering discipline, health, and teamwork among the youth. Medals were given to first three winners cadets in boys and girls category separately.
A highlight of the event was a motivational talk by Mrs Nayanmoni Saikia, an Arjuna Awardee and distinguished Indian international Lawn Bowler. Mrs Saikia captivated the audience with her inspiring journey and shared valuable insights on perseverance, dedication, and the role of sports in personal development.
“This event is not just about running, it’s about coming together as a community to celebrate our shared passion for sports and fitness. We are thrilled with the turnout and the enthusiasm displayed by the cadets” said Commanding Officer, 60 Assam Girls Battalion NCC.
National Sports Day in India is celebrated on August 29th to commemorate the birthday of Major Dhyan Chand, one of the most iconic figures in Indian sports history. He was a legendary field hockey player whose exceptional skills and achievements earned him the nickname "The Wizard" of hockey. His contribution to the sport and his role in India's success in hockey are central to the significance of this day. His career spanned from the 1920s to the 1940s, during which he played a pivotal role in leading India to three Olympic gold medals in hockey (1928, 1932, and 1936). National Sports Day was officially established in 2012 to honor Dhyan Chand's legacy and to promote sports and physical education across the country.
The “RUN FOR FUN” event aimed to encourage active lifestyles and foster a sense of camaraderie among participants. The 4km run was for Senior Division(SD) and Senior Wing(SW) cadets both boys and girls, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the event. The success of today’s event reaffirms the commitment of the NCC Group Headquarters, Guwahati and NCC Directorate NER in promoting sports and a healthy lifestyle among the youth.
